MEP Manuela Ripa (ÖDP) takes part in the official presentation of the construction of the semiconductor plant of the US company Wolfspeed in Saarland

Ripa: "European independence for semiconductors 'Made in Saarland'!"

(Ensdorf, 01.02.2023) Together with the German automotive supplier ZF, the US company Wolfspeed is today presenting its plans to build the world's largest factory for the production of silicon carbide semiconductors. The factory is to be built on the site of an old power plant - news that will make environmentalists and climate protectionists sit up and take notice. According to the US company, this could create up to 1000 new jobs in Saarland.

Saarland MEP Manuela Ripa (ÖDP) also attended the presentation - and was delighted: "The construction of this gigafactory for semiconductors in Ensdorf in Saarland paves the way for more European independence - technology 'Made in Saarland'!

Saarland is in the midst of a structural change towards sustainable technologies. The consideration of nature conservation by using a brownfield site instead of arable land for factory construction is a showcase project on the way to the industry of tomorrow!

The planned chip factory not only promotes Saarland as a business location, but also helps Europe to reduce its technological dependency while respecting soil protection!"

Background: Europe must become more independent and innovative, especially in chip production. At present, Europe is still largely dependent on suppliers from third countries. This urgently needs to change. Chips are a key component, especially for the expansion of renewable energies and electromobility.
