Nature urgently needs our support!

Attention: Nature urgently needs our support

On World Food Security Day, one of the issues is how we can feed the world's growing population even in times of crisis. To do this, we need an intact natural environment.

But we are currently destroying our environment: over 70% of our soils are in an unhealthy state. Biodiversity is declining. Farmers are struggling to maintain their production. Climate change is only making the situation worse.

That is why we are currently discussing the EU Restoration Act in the European Parliament. At least 20% of natural and marine areas in the EU are to be restored by 2030. Because a vital environment is the basis of our agriculture.

It is therefore irresponsible for the Christian Democrats to join forces with right-wing parties to massively attack the EU renaturation law. Worse still, the EPP has now even left the negotiating table on the law.

They want us to believe that stricter laws to save nature and the climate will drive up food prices and ruin farmers. They claim that hunger could break out in the EU. Wrong! Only the agricultural industry and food corporations benefit from destructive production methods.

No more nonsensical arguments that nature conservation and food production do not go together. Without nature, there is no food. We need to protect natural resources, not exploit them.

Now that the advisory Agriculture and Fisheries Committees have spoken out against the renaturation law under the pretext of food security, the important vote in the lead Environment Committee will follow next week.

My Green/EFA group has therefore launched the #OhneNaturKeineNahrung campaign, including a petition, which I have signed. 🖋

Please do the same and help get the renaturation law passed - because THAT is good for food security!
