Far too late: Federal government bans chick shredding

The federal government has initiated a ban on chick shredding from 2022. "Far too late!", says Manuela Ripa, MEP for the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP). "Every year, 45 million male chicks are killed in this cruel, completely inhumane way. This should have been stopped a long time ago. Such a practice means incredible and completely unnecessary animal suffering."

Every year, 45 million male chicks are killed in this cruel, completely inhumane way. This should have been stopped a long time ago.

However, Manuela Ripa is also critical of the alternative approach of sorting out the eggs before the male chicks hatch: "That can't be a long-term solution either. Although we are moving away from killing chicks, we are not solving the actual problem. It doesn't change the suffering of laying hens, for example. We finally need a change of system in agriculture: away from greed for profit, away from industrial high-performance farms, away from factory farming. We need fair, farmer-run farms - only then will we succeed in achieving sustainable, environmentally and climate-friendly agriculture," concludes the EU politician.
