ÖDP lecture: Biodiversity in danger - high time to act consistently in Europe
On November 15, we are organizing a conference on World Whole Grain Day. Together we are focusing our attention on the importance of this nutritious and often underestimated grain. The health of children and young people is particularly important to me. What they eat when they are young will have a major impact on their health when they are older.
As host, I am opening the International Whole Grain Day 2023 in the European Parliament. Together with renowned experts such as Marco Springmann from the prestigious University of Oxford and Fatima Hachem, Head of the United Nations Nutrition Education and Consumer Awareness Team, we will discuss this topic on 15.11.2020 from 4 pm.
On October 12, we are organizing the animal welfare conference "Greens4Animals" to bring together local politicians and members of the European Parliament, animal welfare activists and NGOs to demand stronger animal welfare legislation with one voice.
The first panel will deal with issues relating to legislation on the protection of farm animals. In the second panel, which I am co-moderating, we will discuss measures for greater animal welfare that should be implemented from the local to the global level.
The aim is also to keep up the political pressure on the Commission to finally present the legislative package on animal protection!
Nature has rights too!
In Ecuador, an act of violence against people and nature is looming. The government and oil industry are pushing for oil extraction in Yasuní National Park in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon - a blow to biodiversity and indigenous rights. In a referendum in August, the people of Ecuador will decide on the future of Yasuní National Park. They can either vote for the protection of the rainforest or the expansion of oil production in the Amazon region.
We from the ÖDP - The Nature Conservation Party support the referendum in the spirit of nature and human rights and are holding an online information event on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 8 pm via Zoom. Speakers are Hans Leo Bader, initiator of the referendum "Rights of Nature" in Bavaria, and Annika Sutter from the Yasuní Initiative in Ecuador. I will be giving a welcome speech!
Be sure to be there!
Is it possible to reconcile family and career in politics? The second part of our ÖDP - The Nature Conservation Party event series "Women in Politics" dealt with the topic of reconciling family and political career.
This is one of the major challenges facing women and mothers in particular, who continue to be severely underrepresented in politics. Cécile Weidhofer, project manager of the European Academy for Women in Politics and Business in Berlin, also points this out. In a stimulating and exciting discussion, we will discuss ways in which we can manage the still long road to real compatibility. This requires support from all sides - in the family, especially from the partner, at work from the employer, in politics by changing structures, but also in the party itself through understanding and support. This benefits not only women, but society as a whole! Incidentally, the ÖDP is therefore calling for a family salary.
You can watch the entire recording here:
Thanks to Ms. Weidhofer and my party colleagues and co-organizers Charlotte Schmid and Kirsten Jäkel for their participation.
I'm already looking forward to the next round of this series!
Do we need women in politics?
I discussed this deliberately provocative key question with two experts, Professor Corinna Kröber, who studies inequality in politics, and author Heike Specht ("The First of Their Kind") as well as the federal chairwoman of the ÖDP Charlotte Schmitt, the co-chairwoman of the ÖDP - Bavaria Agnes Becker and the chairwoman of our federal women's working group Kirsten Elisabeth Jäkel.
The event marks the start of our discussion series "Women in politics". I came up with the idea together with Kirsten Elisabeth Jäkel. Our aim is to shed light on the various facets and challenges that women face in politics. Because although women are now equally represented in many areas of society, there are still obstacles and prejudices that make it difficult for women to enter politics. High time to discuss this! Incidentally, our party, the ÖDP, has one of the highest proportions of women in the German party landscape. The majority of our top positions are held by women and I am delighted to be part of this strong women's team as an MEP!
During the discussion, Prof. Kröber talked about the influence of women on the stability of a government, while Ms. Specht presented the historical perspective of women in politics, followed by practical examples of our ÖDP female politicians! Of course, we will keep you up to date on further events in this series here!
Fair trade instead of free trade!
The EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is once again on everyone's lips, as the agreement is about to be concluded after more than 20 years of negotiations.
The agreement between the two trading blocs of the EU and the Mercosur states of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay would, among other things, increase trade in beef and soybeans many times over.
These products are already associated with massive environmental destruction, genetic engineering and human rights violations against indigenous peoples.
My position and that of my party, the Ecological Democratic Party, is clear:
Even a supplementary agreement is not enough to guarantee nature conservation, especially of the Amazon rainforest, and the protection of local people!
I spoke to Brazil and agriculture expert Prof. Dr. Antonio Andrioli, who is currently a visiting researcher at the University of Hamburg, and trade expert Lis Cunha from Greenpeace Germany about the agreement, the supplementary agreement and its potential impact.
I would like to thank them both for their comments on more climate protection and fair trade policy.
If you want to understand the complex EU-Mercosur agreement and its potential consequences, you should watch this video:
I would like to cordially invite you to attend a (hybrid) breakfast event at the European Parliament on Tuesday, June 07, 2023 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. on a holistic and patient-centered approach to cancer care
In integrative oncology, practices from different medical traditions are used alongside conventional cancer treatments to optimize health, quality of life and clinical outcomes at all stages of the disease. Integrating these traditions into mainstream care ensures safety, provides a coherent approach to treatment and often meets patients' wishes.
Several studies have demonstrated the benefits and potential of integrative cancer care in terms of reducing patient suffering and improving long-term outcomes. Following the conference "Integrative Oncology 2020" organized by the MEP Interest Group on Integrative Medicine and Health, this roundtable is part of an ongoing exploration of the contribution of integrative oncology to improving cancer care outcomes. We will explore the added value of different integrative treatments for patients and discuss best practices of integration across Europe.

I would like to cordially invite you to attend a (hybrid) breakfast event at the European Parliament on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. on the trade negotiations between the EU and Australia.
This event, organized in collaboration with the European and Australian offices of Humane Society International (HSI), will focus on whether farm animals and wildlife will benefit from a trade agreement between the EU and Australia. The event is also supported by Eurogroup for Animals and the Australian Animal Alliance.
The trade negotiations between the EU and Australia are taking place at a time when the political landscape in relation to the protection of farmed and wild animals is constantly changing.
As part of the EU's "Farm to Fork" strategy, the European Commission is currently working on revising and extending the scope of existing EU animal welfare legislation. This will lead, for example, to new animal welfare standards for species such as cattle and sheep, for which there are currently no species-specific regulations in EU law.
Similarly, as part of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2023, the Commission recently adopted its revised EU Action Plan on Wildlife Trafficking, which also includes policy commitments relevant to international trade policy.
The event will bring together stakeholders from the EU and Australia to discuss the progress of negotiations to date and highlight the most important animal welfare aspects in free trade agreements.

At the three-day cross-party Beyond Growth Conference 2023 at the European Parliament in Brussels, I had the pleasure of chairing a panel on the circular economy on the second day of the event.
Prof. Michael Braungart, co-founder of the Cradle2Cradle principle, and Kate Raworth, inventor of the Donut Economics theory, were among the participants.
I was very pleased about the exciting exchange with experts from politics, business and science!
The recording of the panel can be found here: https://youtu.be/bumnAZ4wKmE
Together with the Eurogroup for Animals, AAP and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, I organized an event on 23 March 2023 to address the problems associated with wild animals traded as pets. The results of recent research on this topic were presented, as well as a realistic proposal for the legal basis of an EU positive list.
A new guideline was presented and recommendations for the impact assessment and feasibility study were also discussed. In addition, experts from member states with already introduced positive lists were brought together to identify challenges and solutions in a panel discussion.
The blocking clause as we know it produces a lot of "lost" votes. This could be seen just a few weeks ago in the repeat election in Berlin: Small parties such as Klimaliste, Tierschutzpartei, ÖDP, Volt and Piraten accounted for around 137,000 votes, which were not taken into account in the distribution of seats. At the same time, there was a neck-and-neck race between the SPD and the Greens for second place and thus for the question of who would be mayor in the event of a red-green-red coalition (in the end, the SPD was ahead by just 53 votes). If the voters of small parties had been given the chance to cast their vote for another party after their votes had been invalidated, the result would probably have been a different order that would have better reflected the true will of the voters. Another observation was made in the Saarland state elections: Due to the large number of parties that were unable to overcome the 5 percent hurdle, the proportion of voters whose votes were not reflected in the state parliament added up to a total of 22.3 percent. Record-breaking and not good for democracy!
The aim of this event organized by the ÖDP Saarland regional association is to present solutions that can reduce the number of lost votes as far as possible and thanks to which the political positions held by the population can be reflected more accurately than before in the election results.
Together with the German Steel Federation, we held a parliamentary breakfast on January 11, 2023 to discuss how the green transformation of the European steel industry can succeed.
The focus was on ways in which policymakers can support the transition to a sustainable circular economy by creating appropriate framework conditions.
Together with Humane Society International Europe, the NGO Born Free, Eurogroup for Animals, Pro Wildlife and the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), I organized an event on 12 October 2022 to address the issue of trophy hunting.
Specifically, the focus was on how import restrictions can counteract this unnecessary animal suffering. When finding solutions, it is important that the interests of local communities are taken into account and ecosystems are preserved.
A report was presented that argues for a revision of the current legal context. A joint position was developed based on facts, which was supported by numerous other non-governmental organizations and institutes.
Together with the European Public Health Alliance and experts from the University of Liverpool and the Open University, I spoke on June 28, 2022 about EU-wide regulation of food marketing that specifically targets children.
The European consumer protection organization BEUC also took part via video. Members of the European Parliament, including my colleague Sarah Wiener, and the European Commission also took part in the discussion.
On October 26, 2020, following World Kangaroo Day, I hosted a webinar as Vice President of the Intergroup on Animal Welfare and Conservation with Eurogroup for Animals, Vier Pfoten and Animals Australia. It was about what's at stake for animals in the EU-Australia trade negotiations, including the EU's role in commercial kangaroo hunting.
We addressed animal welfare concerns and the report "Animal Protection in EU-Australia Trade Negotiations", which presented proposals to not only not harm animals in future trade agreements, but to use them as a platform to make progress for them.
We also discussed with representatives of the European Commission the EU's trade in products from commercial kangaroo hunting in Australia, on which the Eurogroup for Animals has presented a new report.
The entire webinar is available here.
