Coalition agreement: Binding animal husbandry labeling from 2022 - MEP Ripa calls for this for the whole of Europe

Brussels, 09.12.21. "I very much welcome the fact that the new government wants to introduce mandatory animal welfare labeling in Germany from 2022," said MEP Manuela Ripa, commenting on the plans of the traffic light coalition. "This is an important step towards greater animal welfare and better consumer education. We also need this across Europe. In the European Parliament, I am campaigning for EU-wide standardized and mandatory labelling for meat products. Consumers deserve transparent information on issues such as the use of total herbicides, the use of genetically modified feed and antibiotics as well as clear, pictorial labeling of animal husbandry so that they can make informed purchasing decisions."

The ÖDP politician attaches particular importance to the visualization of animal husbandry on the product packaging: "For a rapid change of system away from factory farming - which a large majority of citizens reject - for more animal welfare and consumer protection, animal husbandry must be visible on the packaging. Pictures work!"

The coalition agreement speaks of binding animal husbandry labeling, which should include transport and slaughter in addition to origin labeling, as well as naming binding EU-wide uniform standards as a goal. "Germany must also speak out strongly in the Council for mandatory EU animal labeling for all meat products in order to achieve implementation at European level. This will enable consumers throughout Europe to choose better animal husbandry at a glance."
