EU-Australia FTA negotiations

A free trade agreement with Australia must also urgently take animal welfare into account!
At my breakfast event with renowned experts, including from HSI Europe and Humane Society International Australiawe discussed the implications of an EU trade agreement with Australia for wildlife and livestock highlighted.
After all, animal agricultural products such as meat and milk are heavily traded goods between the two trading blocs.
The focus was therefore on the question of whether and how livestock and wildlife could benefit from such an EU-Australia agreement.
During the five-year negotiation of the trade agreement, the framework conditions in animal animal welfare in the EU changed dramatically.
The "Farm to Fork" strategy not only provides for a revision and expansion of the EU's existing animal welfare legislation. As part of the biodiversity strategy, the European Commission has also presented its revised EU action plan against illegal wildlife trade. wildlife trade as part of the biodiversity strategy.
Trade policy must be used as an instrument to bring about positive change for the lives of animals in the wild and in agriculture!
The EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement should be more progressive than the one between the EU and New Zealand: All chapters on sustainable development for food systems and animal welfare should be enforceable.
Many thanks to all participants on site in Brussels and online!
