09 June Reading for the weekend
Markus Söder likes to pretend to be the father of the country - but for whom? Apparently for the #sugar industry...
On my tour of Bavaria in May, I also stopped by the Munich @Merkur.de with Tobias Ruff, the co-chairman of @oedp.bayern, and talked about issues that concern us as a party, including my focus on #consumerprotection in the European Parliament.
The adequate protection of vulnerable consumers like our children is very important to me, not only as a politician but also as a mother. That's why I'm annoyed when Markus Söder publicly frowns on the Federal Minister of Agriculture's overdue proposal to ban #advertising for unhealthy food specifically for children.
Who benefits from this, if not primarily the sugar industry?
Doctors repeatedly emphasize that the #food industry is largely to blame for the widespread disease of obesity, which affects one in four people in Germany.
The fact that hidden ingredients are added to the products, such as cheap sugar concentrates, can even eliminate the feeling of satiety. Because of unclear #food labeling, consumers are often clueless! What's particularly bad is that these addictive substances can also be found in children's products.
Politicians must do something about this, such as a ban on advertising products containing too much sugar, too much salt and too much fat for children. We also need EU-wide mandatory and comprehensible #food labeling in order to make healthier purchasing decisions.
Because only if you are properly informed can you make free purchasing decisions!
