International Day for the Abolition of Animal Experiments

April 24 is the International Day for the Abolition of Animal Experiments.

Millions of animals still die in German laboratories every year - even though modern, animal-free methods have long been available. Saarland is also actively researching alternatives: the company PharmBioTec in Schiffweiler is working successfully with human cell models. Saarland University networks researchers in the field of animal-free methods via the 3R-Saar platform.
The animal experiments that still take place at the university must be subjected to close scrutiny and, where alternative test methods exist, must be stopped.

Politically, I am campaigning in the European Parliament for these innovative methods to be promoted much more strongly and for animal testing to be ended by law. One concrete success: in the report on the new detergents regulation, I was able to successfully introduce the European Parliament's position that animal testing should no longer be permitted for new detergents - an important step for animal welfare and future research.
This must now be defended in the negotiations with the Council and the Commission, the so-called trialogue negotiations.

On Saturday, demonstrations against animal testing will take place in Saarbrücken and many other cities.

I expressly support these protests and call on people to get involved - for modern, ethical science without animal suffering.
