Economic turnaround is the answer for a sustainable future!

Most of today's crises are due to the relentless pursuit of economic growth, which benefits the few and harms the many - people, nature and the climate. That is why I, together with other European parliamentarians, Oxfam and Commons Network, have co-signed an article on post-growth.

Since our foundation 40 years ago, we in the ÖDP - The Nature Conservation Party have been committed to an economic model that operates within planetary boundaries. This is the only way we can achieve sustainable climate protection!

Unfortunately, however, far-right, liberal and Christian Democrat parties in the European Parliament are acting against environmental protection and nature conservation. The farmers' protests that took place in the run-up to the EU elections in particular show how farmers were played off against environmental laws. However, farmers and nature are not at odds with each other! Sustainable agriculture as well as a successful economic and industrial policy can only be achieved in harmony with nature.

To overcome our major social crises, we need to transform our economy. On the subject of farmers, this means fair prices and greater protection against unfair competition from third countries that do not respect our environmental standards.

Targeted public investment and a European Green Deal that goes beyond the constant pursuit of growth and prioritizes workers' rights will open the way to a just and sustainable future.

Together, we must create the common good beyond growth to ensure a truly just transition.
