STOP the plans for octopus factory farming in Spain

No EU funding for animal suffering!

My protest continues: the Spanish large-scale fishery NuevaPescanova still wants to build a highly problematic octopus farm on the Canary Islands - with EU funding!

On the Spanish islands, one million animals a year are said to be crammed into the smallest, permanently lit spaces in industrial factory farming. This leads to aggressive behavior and even cannibalism among the light-shy solitary animals.

Octopods are highly intelligent creatures that want to explore an interesting environment. Instead, they are bred sterilely in such a farm and then killed by hypothermia in ice slurry without anaesthesia. A method that causes fear and pain, as scientific studies have shown.

This project not only contradicts the principles of ethical animal husbandry, but also EU goals for nature conservation and climate protection. In addition, the octopods in this commercial farm are fed unecologically with fish meal and fish oil. The EU Green Deal is supposed to make our food system more sustainable and animal-friendly. This octopus farm therefore not only contradicts the EU Green Deal, but also the EU guidelines for strategic agriculture.

It would be a bad joke if we were to set up the world's first octopod farm in the European Union of all places. It is even more incomprehensible that the project could possibly be supported with funds from the NextGenerationEU pot.

This must be prevented at all costs! That is why I and my colleagues have sent a clear letter to the local government and the European Commission.
