New genetic engineering: ÖDP launches petition

We have made the EU's plan to approve new genetically modified organisms (GMOs) without strict regulations a priority.

With a petition in Bavaria against GMOs, we from the ÖDP - The Nature Conservation Party are sending a clear signal! We must fight to ensure that existing EU legislation continues to apply to genetic engineering. This means mandatory safety checks, transparency and the labeling of all GMOs.

The new deregulation plans of the European Union (EU) could undermine the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act, as EU law takes precedence over national state and federal regulations. The Bavarian ÖDP has therefore launched a petition that can be signed by all residents of Bavaria.

You can find our petition here: https://www.oedp-bayern.de/fileadmin/user_upload/01-instanzen/043/020-Aktuelles/030-Aktionen/Petition_zur_Verteidigung_des_Bayerischen_Naturschutzgesetzes.pdf

Background information:

In Europe, there are strict regulations for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) - for our safety and for transparency. Genetically modified foods are foods whose DNA has been altered by genetic engineering - in a way that does not occur naturally.

But now the EU Commission wants to soften these regulations. Under pressure from large chemical companies, some genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are no longer to be tested or labeled as such. There is a lot of money at stake, because the companies will increase their profits if their products no longer have to be labeled "GMO". We would then buy and eat food without knowing that it is genetically modified.

If the corporations get their way, farmers will use more patented seeds that rely on toxic pesticides. Many new genetically modified plants are resistant to pesticides, such as glyphosate. The fate of our food system will then be in the hands of Bayer-Monsanto and other corporations. Weaker regulations on these GMOs mean a major step backwards for farmers, for us humans and for the environment.

We are dependent on our national governments. They must stand up for transparent, safe and healthy food. Only a few are doing that at the moment. That's why it's so important that we send a clear message now - to our governments and to the EU Commission. We want them toput transparency and safety beforecorporate profits.
