11 Feb. I am fighting against illegal dog and cat trafficking in the EU under the Dogs & Cats Act
Within the framework of the EU Dogs & Cats Act, as rapporteur in the Environment Committee (ENVI), I am campaigning against the illegal trade in dogs and cats in the EU.
Online platforms in particular have become the most important channels for the illegal trade in dogs and cats. Although the online trade in pets is generally legal, criminal traders use the anonymity of the internet to sell unregistered animals that are often kept in deplorable conditions. This can severely affect the physical and mental well-being of these animals and even lead to behavioral disorders. Often these animals also have diseases.
Without effective registration regulations, illegal traders can remain anonymous, making it difficult for the authorities to uncover abuses. This must not be allowed to happen!
My report calls for these measures, but is still in the negotiation phase with the other political groups. After the vote in Parliament, the law will be negotiated with the EU Commission and the Council of Ministers.
With the Dogs & Cats Act, we have the chance to significantly improve the protection of pets in the EU - for the animals and for the people who love them! 🐾
