MEP Manuela Ripa on the International Day against Violence against Women

Ripa: "Violence against women and domestic violence are widespread and affect an and affect an estimated one in three women in the EU!"

In March of this year, the European Commission published its proposal
for the introduction of EU-wide regulations to combat violence against women
and domestic violence. This provides for the criminalization of certain forms of violence that disproportionately affect
women. These include
rape for lack of consent, female
genital mutilation and cyber violence (i.e. non-consensual sharing of
intimate images, incitement to violence or hatred on the internet, etc.). Another
important component of the proposal is to strengthen the rights of victims to
respect their privacy in court proceedings and to give them a right
to compensation.

This is the first EU-wide legislation dealing with violence against
women and domestic violence. Violence against women has no
place in the EU!
That is why I am committed to preventing, combating and criminalizing
all forms of gender-based violence and harassment - whether at home, online or on the street!
