International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in plenary session in Brussels

Monday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day of remembrance and warning that reminds us of our responsibility from the past. Today, we commemorated this important day in plenary and reminded ourselves that anti-Semitism, racism and hatred are still a danger today. Remembrance means acting decisively and remaining vigilant - because "never again" is not just a promise, but a mission.

The performance of the Gagliano cello, which once belonged to the Jewish cellist Pál Hermann, was a particularly moving moment. Hermann was arrested and murdered by the Nazis in 1944, but his cello, which he managed to hide before his arrest, has survived. Today it can be heard in parliament and has become a symbol of hope and survival. Hermann's daughter, who accompanied the performance, said at the end of her speech: "No one can destroy music". These words are a powerful reminder that art and culture outlast hatred and that remembrance does not stop - it connects us to the future and reminds us to actively stand up for humanity.
