The EU cycling strategy is coming!

Ripa: "Expand cycling infrastructure and establish European bicycle production!"

(Strasbourg, 16.02.23) MEP Manuela Ripa (ÖDP) comments on today's vote in the European Parliament on an EU cycling strategy as follows: "Cycling is no longer just a hobby these days, but rather part of the transportation infrastructure in Europe! The benefits of cycling are manifold and extend to the areas of transport, health and the environment. A strategy for the entire EU is needed to address this and further expand cycling.

The expansion of cycling infrastructure and the development of independent European bicycle production will make a significant contribution to achieving the goals of the EU Green Deal and the Fit for 55 package. In particular, the production of bicycles and components "Made in Europe" will promote the competitiveness of the EU industry.

However, there are still a number of obstacles to be overcome if the EU cycling strategy is to be successfully implemented - these include the lack of good parking facilities and safe cycle paths as well as inadequate anti-theft measures.

It is also important to promote synergies between bicycles and trains, e.g. by providing more spaces for bicycles on trains and more secure parking areas for bicycles at train stations and mobility hubs."
